10 things to know about Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for Parakram Diwal 2023

To commemorate the anniversary, 21 unidentified islands in Andaman and Nicobar will be given the awards recipients of the Param Veer Chakra. On Monday, a model of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep National Memorial, which will be constructed in his honour, will also be unveiled.

On January 23, Parakram Diwas is observed to mark the anniversary of freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth. The 126th birthday of Netaji (Bose) is being celebrated this year. To commemorate the anniversary, 21 unidentified islands in Andaman and Nicobar will be given the awards recipients of the Param Veer Chakra. On Monday, a model of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep National Memorial, which will be constructed in his honour, will also be unveiled.

1) The charismatic leader who coined catchphrases like “Delhi Chalo” was born in Cuttack, Bengal Division, Odisha, on January 23, 1897.

2) His catchphrase, “You give me blood, I will give you freedom” (Tum mujhe khoon do, mai tumhe azadi doonga). It fueled Indians’ patriotism during the war for independence.

3) Bose was the ninth of Jankinath and Prabhavati’s 14 children, which included 8 sons and 6 daughters. Jankinath was a well-known lawyer.

4) He studied at Presidency College in Calcutta till his suspension for nationalist activities in 1916. Later, in 1919, he received his degree from Scottish Churches College.

5) His parents sent him to Cambridge University in England to study for the Indian Civil Service Exam.

6) Following reports of nationalist unrest in his country, Bose abruptly resigned in April 1921 after passing the exam in 1920 and hastily returned to India.

7) After moving to India, Bose joined the Indian National Congress but eventually switched to Gandhi’s less combative style.

8) He was elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1938. Nevertheless, after defeating his rival in reelection, resigned a year later.

9) Bose founded “Azad Hind Fauj” on October 21, 1943, and afterwards launched Azad Hind radio station in Germany.

10) On August 18, 1945, he vanished after an aircraft crash in Taiwan. Two of the three investigation commissions into the catastrophe claimed he perished as a result of the collision, but the third said he survived the tragedy.
