5 years in prison for J’khand Cong MLA protest in 2016

The Jharkhand High Court on Monday sentenced Congress MLA from Dumka, Shankar Lal Ram to five years in prison for his involvement in a protest against the state government in 2016. Ram was convicted under sections 147 (rioting), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

The case pertains to violence that broke out during a protest led by Devi on August 29,2016. Several policemen and civic administration officials were injured during the clash. Police had opened fire to contain the violence, leading to death of two protesters. The case was filed by then block development officer Dinesh Suren.
