Is rock salt just as bad for you as table salt? Since all salts have a comparable sodium concentration, the ICMR recommends limiting your intake of all salts.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) elaborates on the dangers of consuming too much salt in its latest guidelines, pointing out that since all types of salt have roughly the same amount of sodium, consumption of them should be regulated.

Because rock salts contain more minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese than table salt, they are regarded as healthier than table salt. Pink salt is known as sentha namak, whereas black salt is known as kala namak. In contrast to white salt, which is processed, rock salt is found in its pure crystalline form.

“The color, texture, and scent of pink and black salts may be readily recognized from one another. One of the finest types of salt is pink salt. Black salt darkens with storage. To preserve this salt, a variety of spices, charcoal, seeds, and tree bark are employed. Because the sodium level of all salts is nearly the same, their consumption should be restricted regardless of the kind, according to ICMR standards.

adverse effects of consuming too much salt
Consuming a lot of salt raises blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease. Overindulging in salt can potentially harm the intestinal flora and cause stomach cancer.

High salt consumption has been shown to have a negative effect on blood vessels, blood pressure, bones, and the gastrointestinal system. There is a strong association between salt intake and blood pressure,” says ICMR.

“It is easy to distinguish between pink and black salts based on their distinct colors, textures, and scents. Pink salt is among the best kinds of salt. Black salt ages as it is stored. A variety of spices, charcoal, seeds, and tree bark are used to preserve this salt. ICMR regulations state that all salts have almost the same amount of sodium, hence consuming any sort of salt should be limited.

negative consequences of excessive salt consumption
Eating a lot of salt causes blood pressure to rise and heart disease risk to increase. Consuming excessive amounts of salt may damage the gut flora and result in stomach cancer.

Excessive intake of salt has been demonstrated to negatively impact blood vessels, blood pressure, bones, and the gastrointestinal tract. Blood pressure and salt intake are strongly correlated, according to ICMR.

According to the ICMR, “restriction of dietary salt decreases the risk of hypertension,” suggesting a reduction in the consumption of processed and preserved foods including sauces, ketchups, biscuits, chips, cheese, and salt fish.

Additionally, according to ICMR, meals high in potassium, like fruits and vegetables that are still in season, can help lower blood pressure by aiding in the excretion of salt.

What is the recommended daily intake of added salt?
The ICMR recommends consuming no more than 5 grams of salt each day.

Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal of Shark Tank India argue on work-life balance: “70-hour work week…”

Shark Tank India’s Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal clash over work-life balance debate: ‘70-hour work week…’

Should employees work longer hours? In a recent interview Shark Tank India’s Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal expressed their contrasting views.

Creating the right work-life balance isn’t easy, and if you work for yourself, it can be almost impossible, as per entrepreneurs Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal, who were both seen together in various seasons of the popular reality show Shark Tank India. During a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, Namita Thapar expressed her view on work-life balance, saying people who own businesses must work long hours, but ‘common’ salaried employees don’t need to. However, Anupam Mittal had a different viewpoint.

Anupam Mittal on work-life balance
When asked if he believed work-life balance was achievable and his view on the debate around it, Anupam, who is the founder-CEO of Shaadi.com, said, “I think it is a big lie that’s being told to this generation, and I think it stinks because you are not ever going to… okay this is for people who want to achieve something extraordinary in life… you are not going to achieve anything extraordinary in life by counting the hours that you are putting in. Work-life harmony and flexibility, all that I understand.”

He then spoke about how the productivity in his company has gone up by 30 percent due to a hybrid work model as people get to take care of their personal life while also being available for work from home.

He added, “But simply clocking hours as a means of defining work-life balance is destroying a whole generation. We work 16 hours a day because we believe so much in what we are trying to build; and we never looked at our clocks and watches, although we were on salaries. I think that really builds character, right? When you struggle… success builds ego, but struggle builds character. I think people need to really go all in as far as (possible), if they want to achieve (something) in the early part of their career, when they still have the energy and the clarity in terms of what they want.”

Chiming in, Namita, the CEO of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, said, “This is a crock of bull****. Pardon my language. I completely disagree. I apologise for interrupting you (Anupam).”

Namita Thapar on work-life balance
Namita then explained her position, saying, “Basically this whole discussion and argument that is going on, pardon my language, is a crock of bull****. I will give you three data points, very specific data points. No. 1, when Emcure went public, it was $3 billion, my family owns 80 percent, so imagine the kind of wealth I am making. The founders, set of co-founders and top management, look at the kind of money they are making. Obviously, we could work 20 hours a day, which is what we all do. But the employee? Today, my accountant, he is making a salary, he does not have the upside of putting in that kind of hours. If he is going to put in that kind of hours, my second data point is, he is going to have serious, serious, serious physical and mental health issues.”

She added, “So, I think for founders and high stakeholders, who make tons of money — go for it. Work 24 hours a day forever! But I think for the common man and woman… (there needs to be) a certain number of hours that they are supposed to work, and of course when there are deliverables… people work longer hours, but it is not on a non-stop, standard number basis.”

Namita also said, “Third thing: For God’s sake, don’t get married and have children because the next generation is suffering because of non-existent parents… just spare them the misery and mental health issues due to having an absentee parent. So, I think for people with high stakes, yes (work long hours), but for common employees, have a reasonable work limit, knowing that there will be some blips during deliverable time, but it cannot be a constant 70-hour work week, which is what a lot of people are proposing.”

ELECTION

Here is a simple recipe for you to attempt at home as the BJP celebrates the Maharashtra Election 2024 results with jalebi.

“As BJP celebrates Maharashtra Election 2024 results with jalebi, here’s an easy recipe for you to try at home

BJP celebrates a sweeping victory in Maharashtra Election 2024 with jalebis. If you have a sweet tooth too, try this easy recipe at home

Jalebis and celebrations go hand in hand. But the deep-fried Indian delicacy also has a special connection to elections in our country. It all started when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi showed a box of jalebis from the famous Matu Ram Halwai during a rally in Haryana’s Gohana, stating that it should be sold across the nation. He wanted these jalebis to be exported in order to generate more employment opportunities in India. Well, on the day of the Haryana assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders celebrated their party’s victory in the state by eating jalebis. BJP leaders even got jalebis delivered to Gandhi’s home. Today, as the Mahayuti alliance— comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP— marks a landslide victory in Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024, BJP leaders are once again celebrating with piping hot jalebis.

Well, if this makes you crave jalebis too, try out this easy recipe by Swasthi. All you need for the jalebi is 1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons corn starch, 1/8 teaspoon turmeric, 1/2 cup curd, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, oil or ghee as needed. Coming to the ingredients for the sugar syrup: 1 cup sugar, 1/2-3/4 cup water, 1 pinch saffron, 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder, 1 teaspoon lemon juice.

Let’s start with the sugar syrup. Begin by adding sugar and water to a pot. Boil on medium heat until it reaches the consistency of a single string. Pour lemon juice, cardamom powder and saffron. Remove from the stove, stir and set aside.

Mix maida, cornflour and turmeric in a bowl. Add curd to this mixture before making a batter by pouring in the water. Beat the batter with a whisk until smooth. Now that your batter is ready, let’s begin frying! Heat the ghee/oil on medium heat. To the batter, add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Add soda to this concoction and mix. Now take 2-3 tablespoons of the batter and put it in a zip lock bag or a cloth bag. Squeeze the bag gently over the hot oil/ghee in circular motions from the center, slowly moving outside to get a spiral jalebi. Fry until crispy and then dip this into the sugar syrup. Let it rest for two minutes before taking it out and serving hot.
