A 5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes central Japan, but there is no tsunami alert.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that despite a powerful magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck central Japan on Monday, there was no tsunami warning.

The shallow jolt was focused in the Noto Peninsula, where a severe earthquake on January 1 killed over 230 people. It struck at 6:31 am (2131 GMT).

Public broadcaster NHK noted that although there were no early indications of damage, local officials were still gathering information.

A second, lesser magnitude-4.8 earthquake in the same area occurred approximately ten minutes after the first one on Monday morning, according to the JMA.

According to NHK, the operator of the nearby Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear facility announced that operations had been halted to inspect for damage.

The broadcaster issued a warning, saying that numerous buildings in the Sea of Japan coastal region might have already sustained damage from the strong earthquake and its aftershocks in January.

Just as families were enjoying New Year’s Day, the January 1 earthquake in the Noto Peninsula ignited fires, wrecked and fell buildings, and knocked out infrastructure.

Japan is one of the most tectonically active nations in the world, perched atop four major geological plates that form the western side of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

With a population of about 125 million, the archipelago is the epicentre of about 18% of the world’s earthquakes, causing an estimated 1,500 shocks annually.

The great majority are benign, though the harm they inflict varies depending on where they are and how deep below the Earth’s surface.

Nonetheless, in the fourth-largest economy in the world, innovative building methods and stringent building codes usually result in minimal damage even from large earthquakes.
