The Chinese military has sent a record-breaking number of 18 nuclear-capable bombers into Taiwan in a single day, in what is being seen as a major show of force against the self-ruled island. Taiwan’s defense ministry said it had scrambled fighter jets and navy ships in response to the “unusual” move by Beijing.

The move comes amid growing tensions between China and Taiwan, with Beijing seeing the island as part of its territory that must be reunited with the mainland. Taiwan has been self-ruled since 1949, when Nationalists fled there after losing a civil war with the Communists. China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

The 18 bombers were part of a group of around 40 aircraft that also included fighter jets and anti-submarine warfare planes, the Taiwanese defense ministry said. It was the largest such incursion by Chinese military aircraft into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone since the ministry began tracking such data in 2015.

The ministry said it was monitoring the situation closely and would take “appropriate measures” to protect the country’s security. It did not elaborate.

China’s defense ministry said the bombers had conducted “routine training” in the area and accused Taiwan.
