A university is part of Xi Jinping’s strategy to deal with China’s ageing population.

There are many ways to deal with an ageing population. Some countries raise the retirement age, some offer incentives for people to have more children, and some encourage migration. China is taking a different approach: they’re building more universities.

The reasoning is that a university education will allow people to delay retirement and stay in the workforce longer. This is especially beneficial for women, who often retire earlier than men. And it’s not just about the money. An ageing population can put a strain on social services, so keeping people in the workforce will help to ease that burden.

It’s an interesting strategy, and one that other countries may start to emulate as they grapple with their own ageing populations.
