The European Commission (EC) is investigating whether India’s biometric identification system, Aadhaar, violates EU data protection rules.

Aadhaar is the world’s largest biometric identification system, with over 1.1 billion enrolled members. The EC is concerned that the personal data of EU citizens who have obtained an Aadhaar card while living in India may not be adequately protected.

The EC is also investigating whether the use of Aadhaar by private companies in India violates EU rules on data protection.

Aadhaar has been criticized by privacy advocates in India and abroad for its potential to be used for mass surveillance and data theft. The EC’s investigation will likely focus on whether the Indian government has adequate safeguards in place to protect the data of Aadhaar enrollees.
