Amid worries about a Covid price increase, China reins in soaring medicine prices.

China has announced it will take measures to rein in soaring prices for medicines, amid worries that a recent surge in Covid-19 cases could lead to a sharp increase in prices.

The move comes as China grapples with a fresh wave of Covid-19 infections, with the country reporting more than 3,000 new cases on Saturday – the highest daily total since March.

While the vast majority of cases have been in the north-eastern province of Heilongjiang, there have also been a number of cases in Beijing and other parts of the country.

With the resurgence of the virus, there are concerns that prices for medicines and other medical supplies could spike, as happened during the first wave of the pandemic.

To combat this, the Chinese government has announced a series of measures to keep prices in check, including capping the prices of key Covid-19 medicines and increasing government subsidies for medical supplies.

The government has also urged drugmakers to increase production and vowed to crack down on price gouging.

These measures will help to ensure that patients have access to the medicines they need at a price they can afford, and help to prevent any further escalation of the Covid-19 crisis in China
