Amidst the surge in temperatures, there is an increase in cases of gastroenteritis and hepatitis. Tips for safety and precautions
Summertime brings with it a host of health issues due to the rising temperatures and humidity. Hepatitis and gastroenteritis cases rise in the intense heat, and children between the ages of two and seven years old have a notable increase in Hepatitis A and E cases due to contaminated food and water. It will be essential to seek prompt treatment for hepatitis as it can cause liver failure, as the intense heat outside creates an environment that is favourable for bacteria and viruses to flourish and multiply in unsanitary conditions.
“Children are complaining of various signs and symptoms such as jaundice, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, and fever and will require timely medical attention to tackle this condition,” said Dr. Seema Joshi, Senior Consultant Paediatrician and Adolescent Counsellor at Ankura Hospitals in Pune. By limiting the amount of food and beverages that children consume from outside sources, parents can help prevent hepatitis in their children. Make sure your kids eat food that is both fresh and cooked to perfection. Attempt to establish in your kids the summertime habit of eating food that is prepared at home to ensure their general health.
“Spoiled food, contaminated roadside food, and water are the causes of gastroenteritis in kids,” Dr. Seema Joshi stated, emphasising that another serious illness to watch out for in children during the summer is gastroenteritis, also known as stomach flu. This painful stomach infection is accompanied by symptoms like nausea and vomiting, abdominal distress, diarrhoea, and dehydration. Children who consume pre-cut fruits and juices or eat fruits will become ill from food poisoning, as the ice used to prepare them is also contaminated. An infection by a virus, bacteria, or parasite can cause gastroenteritis. In addition to avoiding roadside snacks and drinks, washing hands before consuming food, and practicing proper personal hygiene, parents should make sure their child eats fresh, homemade food every day. As soon as parents notice symptoms in their children, such as vomiting and diarrhoea, they should call a doctor.
Dr. Aklesh Tandekar, Head Consultant Critical Care at Wockhardt Hospitals on Mira Road, contributed his expertise to the discussion by saying, “Most people drink roadside juices that contain ice to beat the heat, like lemon, rose, mango, watermelon, pineapple, or orange.” But if cleanliness is neglected, the ice becomes contaminated with E. Coli bacteria, which can lead to hepatitis and its symptoms, which include fever, nausea, vomiting, exhaustion, and loss of appetite. Drinking boiling water, eating food that has been thoroughly cooked, avoiding ice-filled drinks from roadside stands, and following your doctor’s vaccination recommendations are all crucial for preventing hepatitis.
He went on to say that gastroenteritis, which is caused by a bacterial or viral infection, is the inflammation of the stomach and intestinal lining that results in symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and cramping in the abdomen as a result of tainted food and water. Thus, bad eating habits and the summer’s rising temperatures can both contribute to this unpleasant stomach infection. “Too much heat tends to spoil the food or one can end up eating stale food kept uncovered for a longer time and suffer from this condition,” Dr. Aklesh Tandekar concluded. The risk of gastroenteritis is increased even by using shoddy cooking techniques or failing to wash your hands after using the loo. In order to avoid this situation, Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins from the body, use rehydrating products, maintain proper personal hygiene, stay away from roadside food contamination, get enough rest, and avoid eating raw or stale food. Prepare the food correctly and store it.
