The Indian Army is establishing two girls’ sports companies in Pune and Mhow to provide training in various sports and prepare them for military careers.

Officials announced that two companies will be established at the Army Sports Institute in Pune and the Army Marksmanship Unit in Mhow by April, aligning with the national vision of women empowerment and Nari Shakti.

The goal is to identify young talent, provide formal education, manage administrative tasks, and train them to become sporting champions.

The army plans to train young girls in various sports, including shooting, archery, athletics, boxing, and weightlifting, using its extensive experience in scouting young talent, as demonstrated by its successful boys’ sports companies.

The two locations boast top-tier training infrastructure, sports medicine centers, rehabilitation facilities, and coaching facilities.

The girls will be eligible for recruitment as direct entry non-commissioned officers and direct entry junior commissioned officers, in addition to enrolment as Agniveers.

The senior army teams and athletes will benefit from the training provided at these locations.

Officials announced that senior sportspersons will serve as a motivational tool for young girls, helping them emulate international athletes and acquire necessary skills.

Havildar Preeti Rajak, a champion trap shooter, was promoted to the rank of Subedar in January, becoming the first woman in the Indian Army to hold that rank.
