Asaduddin Owaisi on the BJP’s call for voter verification for those wearing burqas: “Targeting Muslim women”

Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), charged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday with singling out Muslim women and putting obstacles in their way during the voting process. The BJP’s Delhi branch has demanded “proper verification” of female voters who cover their heads with burqas.

The Election Commission has been informed by the Delhi chapter of the Bharatiya Janata Party that women wearing burqas need to be specially checked. Recently, Telangana’s candidate for the Lok Sabha openly insulted and harassed Muslim women. Asaduddin Owaisi stated in an X post that “the BJP finds an excuse or two to harass and target Muslim women in every election.”

The Delhi BJP team met with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Wednesday and specifically requested that female personnel carry out the process of thoroughly verifying female voters who wear face masks or ‘burqas’ during the election on May 25.

According to Owaisi, the election body has explicit guidelines prohibiting voting without proof. He claimed that the “special demand” was being used by the BJP to harass Muslim women.

“Why did the BJP have to make such a special demand when the Election Commission has clear rules and regulations for women who do not observe purdah, whether they are wearing a burqa, veil, or mask? No one is allowed to vote without verification.” Simply go for Muslim ladies, harass them, and put up barriers to voting,” he shouted.

In a different incidence, a complaint has been made against Madhavi Latha, the BJP candidate for the Lok Sabha seat in Hyderabad, following the appearance of an alleged video purporting to show her checking Muslim women’s voter ID cards at a polling place. Charges in the case are made under the Representation of the People Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Elections for all seven Delhi Lok Sabha seats are scheduled for May 25. On June 4, the election results will be declared.
