At the Chicago airport, United Airlines’ jet engine catches fire during takeoff.

On Monday, May 27, a United Airlines flight at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was forced to abort after one of the engines caught fire. Smoke may be seen shooting out of one of the wings in the video footage of the incident.

Around 2:00 pm, United Flight 2091, scheduled to depart for Seattle, experienced an engine fire. Up to 148 passengers and five crew members had to be evacuated due to an incident that occurred on the taxiway, according to separate statements from United Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration.

“I saw smoke coming out of the engine and it was on fire.”

A passenger’s video of the incident, which went viral and is making the rounds on social media, shows smoke shooting out of one of the plane’s wings while it was travelling on the tarmac. The passenger who recorded the footage, Ivan Paloalto, told Storyful how he heard an explosion just as the plane was ready to take off.

“I sensed the force hitting my window. Paloalto stated, “I looked, and there was smoke coming out of the engine and it was on fire.”

Arrivals at the airport had to be temporarily halted by the FAA. Regular business recommenced around 2:45 p.m.

According to United Airlines, the engine issue was “immediately addressed” by emergency personnel, and no injuries were recorded. The passengers disembarked “normally,” it was stated. The airline stated, “We are working to make alternative travel arrangements for customers.”

One of the biggest travel weekends of the year came this past weekend, which coincided with Memorial Day. Regrettably, passengers in Chicago were not the only ones having problems with their flights. Due to potentially dangerous thunderstorms, passengers at JFK International Airport in Queens, New York, were forced to temporarily suspend their travel on Monday.
