Beta testing has begun for Google’s client-side encryption for Gmail.
If you’re a Gmail user, you may have noticed a new option in the settings menu called “Enable client-side encryption.” If you select this option, your email will be encrypted on your computer before it’s sent to Google’s servers. This means that if your email is intercepted en route, it will be unreadable.
This is a big deal because it means that even if the NSA or another government agency were to request access to your Gmail account, they would not be able to read your emails. Google has been working on this project, codenamed “E2E,” for over a year, and they are finally ready to start beta testing.
If you’re interested in keeping your emails private, make sure to enable client-side encryption in your Gmail settings.
