The Gond group in Uttar Pradesh has been approved for incorporation into the ST category by the Rajya Sabha. This is a positive step forward for the Gond community, who have long been marginalized and excluded from many opportunities. This bill will help to level the playing field and give the Gond people a chance to succeed.

The bill seeking inclusion of the Gond community in the Scheduled Tribes category has passed by a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha. The bill was earlier introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 28 and passed on April 1.

The minister said the issue of reservation for tribals has been pending since the 1980s. He blamed the then Congress-led government for “ignoring the plight of the community”. The Narendra Modi government has been mulling over changing the criteria for making tribes eligible for reservation.
