BJP gains ground in Gujarat but Himachal tendencies fluctuate.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the rise in Gujarat, but its fortunes in Himachal Pradesh are more uncertain.

The BJP has been gaining ground in Gujarat in recent years, and it now controls all 26 of the state’s seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament. The party’s performance in Himachal Pradesh has been more mixed, however. It won the state’s lone Lok Sabha seat in 2014, but lost it in a by-election in 2017.

The BJP’s prospects in Himachal Pradesh will largely depend on the outcomes of two upcoming state assembly elections. The first, in Gujarat, is scheduled for December 2017. The second, in Himachal Pradesh, is set for November 2018.

If the BJP can win both of these elections, it will solidify its position as one of India’s leading political parties. If it can only win one, or if it loses both, its position will be weakened.
