A major international chess tournament in Toronto is set to proceed due to resolved visa issues for players and other participants.
The 2024 Candidates Tournament, organized by FIDE, is the most prestigious chess tournament in the world, aiming to determine the World Champion challengers in both Open and Women’s Categories, from April 3 to 23.
The tournament features five Indian players, including teen Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R, Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, Gukesh D, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Koneru Humpy, in the Open category.
FIDE and the Chess Federation of Canada have warned that the tournament could be moved to Spain due to incomplete visa issuance by Friday.
The Chess Federation of Canada has confirmed that visa issues for all players and their accompanying persons have been resolved, and the tournament will take place in Toronto, with no Indian players or accompanying persons without their visas.
FIDE has received visa approvals from Canadian Immigration Authorities, allowing all players and key organizers to submit their passports.
The Canadian Government, Minister of Immigration Marc Miller, MPs, Canadian Chess Federation, media, and the global chess community have expressed their support for the development, expressing hope that everyone involved will receive visas in time for Toronto.
The 70-year-old tournament, which features 16 of the world’s top players, will be held for the first time in North America.
