The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained the brother of murdered Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Bhadu Sheikh in the Birbhum massacre case. The agency had earlier arrested four people, including two TMC leaders, in connection with the case.

Bhadu Sheikh was killed in July 2016 when a mob of over 100 people attacked his village in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The attack was allegedly carried out by members of the rival Samajwadi Party (SP).

The CBI has now detained Bhadu Sheikh’s brother, Abul Hasan, for questioning. Hasan is the president of the TMC’s Birbhum district unit.

The agency is trying to establish the role of Hasan in the massacre. It is also investigating whether he had any role in the subsequent cover-up.

The CBI’s move comes after it received a complaint from the West Bengal government that the state police had not made any headway in the case despite arresting four people.
