The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Ajay Kumar Mishra, has stated that the census data were not hacked or subjected to any sort of cyberattacks. He was addressing the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament, in response to a question raised by member of parliament Hema Malini.

Mishra said that the census data is collected through a “rigorous and robust process” and is stored in a “secured environment”. He added that the data is collected through paper forms which are then digitized, and that “stringent security measures” are in place to protect the data.

Malini had asked if the census data had been hacked, in light of the recent cyberattacks on the Indian government’s websites. Mishra’s assurance that the data is safe will be welcomed by many, as the census is a vital source of information for the government and businesses alike.
