Charles Sobhraj, a serial killer, will be released from a Nepali prison after 19 years.
Nepal is set to release notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj after he has served 19 years in prison. Sobhraj, who is of Indian and Vietnamese descent, was convicted of murdering two Western tourists in Nepal in the 1970s. He is believed to have killed up to 12 people in total, although he was only ever convicted of three murders. After his release, he will be deported back to his home country of France.
Sobhraj’s crimes gained him infamy in the 1970s, when he was dubbed “The Serpent” by the media. He would often target young Western tourists, luring them in with his charm and then drugging them before robbing them or killing them. In some cases, he even staged their deaths to look like accidents. His victims were found in various countries across Asia, including Nepal, India, Thailand, and Turkey.
Sobhraj was finally captured in 1976 in India, but he escaped from prison and remained on the run for several years. He was eventually recaptured in Nepal in 2003 and has been in prison there ever since.
Now that he is set to be released, there are concerns that Sobhraj may resume his killing spree.

Dhanbad student kills herself after being beaten up by the teacher for wearing a bindi
In a heart-wrenching incident, a young student in Dhanbad took her own life after allegedly being subjected to physical assault by a teacher for wearing a bindi, a traditional forehead adornment. The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about student safety and the need for a sensitive and inclusive educational environment.
The incident unfolded on July 11, when the student, whose identity is being withheld, attended school wearing a bindi as part of her cultural and personal expression. According to preliminary reports, a teacher confronted her, berated her for wearing the bindi, and subjected her to physical violence. The traumatized student, unable to cope with the ordeal, tragically ended her life later that day.
News of the incident spread quickly throughout the community, leading to widespread condemnation of the teacher’s actions and demands for justice. Parents, students, and concerned citizens took to social media platforms, expressing their shock, grief, and anger over the tragic turn of events.
Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, with the teacher in question being taken into custody for questioning. The education department and school administration have also been alerted, and disciplinary action is expected to be taken against the responsible teacher.
The incident has reignited discussions about the importance of promoting a culture of respect, tolerance, and inclusivity within educational institutions. Schools play a crucial role in nurturing young minds and must strive to create an environment that embraces diversity and encourages individual expression.
Several child rights organizations and activists have called for stricter measures to prevent such incidents and protect students from any form of abuse or discrimination. They emphasize the need for comprehensive training programs for teachers to sensitize them to cultural diversity and instill values of respect and empathy.
Political leaders and officials have also expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased student and have pledged to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter. They have underlined the urgency of implementing stricter guidelines and protocols to safeguard the well-being of students and prevent any recurrence of such tragic incidents.
As the community mourns the loss of a promising young life, counseling services have been made available to students, teachers, and parents to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of the incident. It is hoped that the tragedy will serve as a catalyst for necessary reforms in the education system, promoting a safe and nurturing environment for all students.
The incident in Dhanbad serves as a stark reminder of the crucial role that educators play in shaping young lives and the responsibility they bear in fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.
