Chief of Dera Sacha Sauda Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is cleared of murder by the HC

Chief of Dera Sacha Sauda Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was cleared of murder charges by the Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday. Even as a comprehensive ruling was expected, a bench of justices Sureshwar Thakur and Lalit Batra declared the accused innocent.

The Dera founder, who makes headlines for his many paroles, will stay behind bars because he was given a 20-year sentence for the 2002 rape of two disciples. In a different journalist murder case, he was also found guilty.

The Dera founder was sentenced to life in jail in 2021 by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Panchkula for his role in the 2002 murder plot of his former disciple, Ranjit Singh.On July 10, 2002, in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana, at Khanpur Kolian village, four attackers shot and killed Ranjit Singh.

According to the CBI, Ranjit Singh was killed because the leader of Dera believed he was responsible for the anonymous letter that was circulated alleging the latter’s use of its female followers for sex. According to the report, Ranjit Singh was called to the Dera in June 2002 and given ominous threats. He declined to ask for a pardon, according to the agency, claiming he had done nothing wrong.

The Dera chief said the trial court erred by failing to take into account the contradictions and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s account in his appeal to the high court in December 2021. He claimed that the benefit of the doubt ought to have been extended to him.

The prosecution witnesses’ statements, according to the Dera chief, were inconsistent. The prosecution was unable to prove its case beyond a “reasonable doubt,” he continued.

The Dera chief was found guilty of killing Sirsa journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati in 2001 for disclosing wrongdoings within the Dera. In this instance, he received a life sentence. The Dera chief has been identified by Punjab Police as a major conspirator in the state’s sacrilege cases from 2015.
