China increases its defence spending by 7.2%; India will be affected

The Chinese annual defense budget has surpassed 7% for the third consecutive year, despite economic slowdown, causing political and military repercussions for principal adversaries like India. The budget is three times India’s, but lower than the US military budget.

In 2027, the Chinese PLA will celebrate its 100th anniversary, with President Xi Jinping focusing on assimilating Taiwan with mainland China through military force. The PLA is upgrading its nuclear and conventional forces, planning to dominate the Indo-Pacific with deep forays into the Indian Ocean using carrier-based task forces. It plans to further consolidate its maritime and missile power in the South China Sea unless Japan abandons its pacific doctrine.

India is engaged in a four-year stand-off with China on the East Ladakh Line of Actual Control, while the PLA is expected to increase maritime pressure by supplying eight Yuan class diesel-electric submarines to Pakistan.

The PLA Navy’s rapid expansion could soon lead to its long legs reaching the Atlantic Ocean and directly challenging western domination through ports on the western seaboard of Africa and South America.

India, as a non-participant in military alliances like AUKUS and QUAD, must enhance its maritime force capacity and capabilities to counter China’s aggressive actions in the Indo-Pacific region, as Japan’s fence sitting is still managed by QUAD.

Top Indian Navy commanders are holding a conference with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on INS Vikramaditya carrier off Goa, focusing on countering the PLA Navy challenge and protecting the 7500-kilometer Indian coastline.

The Indian Navy must make swift decisions regarding the construction of a more advanced aircraft carrier and three nuclear-powered attack submarines to deter the PLA Navy. The life of INS Vikramaditya is expected to end by the end of this decade, and the Navy must decide if it needs a conventional submarine beyond the three additional diesel-attack submarines to be built at Mazagon Dockyards. National security planners must make these decisions quickly due to the lengthy gestation period of large projects, and time is not on India’s side.
