It was a dark and stormy night. The kind of night that makes you want to curl up in bed with a warm cup of tea and a good book. But instead of being tucked in with a blanket, a group of Congress defectors in Delhi were huddled together in a dark corner of a room, plotting their next move.

Their “Ghar wapsi” (homecoming) ceremony, held at 2 a.m. in support of Rahul Gandhi, was a small but significant act of defiance against the party they once belonged to.

The Congress has been in a state of turmoil since Rahul Gandhi stepped down as party president after the drubbing in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Several senior leaders have quit the party, and the defectors in Delhi are just the latest to add to the list.

The Congress may be down, but it’s not out. With the support of defectors like these, Rahul Gandhi may just be able to stage a comeback.
