Counsel made offensive comments,’ says David Warner in an 800-word Instagram post, withdrawing his bid to overturn the leadership ban.

It’s been a tough few weeks for Australian cricket. First, the ball-tampering scandal rocked the sport, then came the fallout. Three players were banned, including vice-captain David Warner.

Now, Warner has taken to Instagram to withdraw his bid to overturn the leadership ban. In an 800-word post, Warner says he’s been left feeling “hurt, emotional and disappointed” by the comments made by Cricket Australia’s chief counsel, Justin Gleeson.

“I am deeply offended by Mr Gleeson’s comments which were made during the course of the hearing,” Warner writes.

“I have now had time to reflect on my actions and the consequences of those actions. I take full responsibility for my part in what happened on that day and I am deeply sorry for the damage that has been caused to the game of cricket.”

Warner also says he won’t be appealing his 12-month ban from cricket.

“I have today advised my legal team not to proceed with the proposed appeal against my Cricket Australia sanctions,” he writes.

“I have to live with the consequences of my actions and I accept the punishment that has been handed down to me. I will be better for this experience.
