Cyclone Remal: IMD issues a “red” signal for these northeastern states, and Assam schools are closed today.

Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, issued an order on Wednesday, May 29, to close schools in nine districts of the state due to Cyclone Remal’s-caused landslides and excessive rain. Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj are the areas where schools and colleges would be closed.

“On May 29, 2024, all educational institutions in the districts of Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj will remain closed due to the Red Alert.” On Tuesday, Sarma wrote, “Remain safe,” on X.

Due to the intense rain on Tuesday, several northeastern states, including Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Manipur, had already ordered the shutdown of schools and offices.

On Sunday night, Cyclone “Remal” made landfall in Northeast India along the Bay of Bengal coast, bringing with it strong winds and a lot of rain to many states. After passing over Bangladesh, the cyclone transformed into a severe depression.

IMD’s northeast “red” alert
On Wednesday, May 29, the northeastern states are expected to see heavy to extremely heavy rains, according to a “red” notice from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The meteorological service predicts that on May 29, there will be severe to extremely heavy rainfall in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, with an estimated total of 115.5 to 204.4 mm. From May 29 to June 1, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

In its Tuesday bulletin, it stated that “squally wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Eastern Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.”

The IMD also recommended in its bulletin that individuals in impacted areas stay indoors and those in vulnerable locations relocate to safer areas. It also advised against going to places where mudslides, landslides, or flooding is a problem.

Northeastern impact of Cyclone Remal: more than thirty fatalities

Tuesday saw the recovery of at least 17 bodies—two of which were children—following the collapse of a stone quarry in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. Meanwhile, three in Assam, two in Meghalaya, and at least ten in Mizoram died in separate weather-related incidents. According to PTI, landslides and intense rains in Nagaland caused more than 40 houses to be damaged and four persons to reportedly perish.

The state administration of Tripura stated that despite the fact that no injuries have been reported, the intense rains prompted 746 individuals from 246 households to seek refuge in relief camps set up around the state. However, the state’s strong rains completely destroyed 185 homes, including at least six residences.
