Death toll from Indonesia earthquake rises by “hundreds,” with over 600 now estimated to be dead

The death toll from Sunday’s earthquake in Indonesia’s Lombok island has risen sharply, with officials now saying that over 600 people have been killed.

The 6.9 magnitude quake, which hit just after 7 p.m. local time, was the second powerful earthquake to strike Lombok in the space of just over a week. Together, the two quakes have now killed more than 630 people and left tens of thousands homeless.

With search and rescue operations still underway, the death toll is expected to rise further. More than 400,000 people have been displaced by the earthquakes, with many forced to sleep outdoors in makeshift shelters.

Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, has visited Lombok to survey the damage and has pledged to provide assistance to those affected. He has also ordered the military to deploy troops to the island to help with relief efforts.

The earthquakes have dealt a severe blow to Lombok’s already fragile tourism industry. The island, which is popular with backpackers and surfers, had just begun to recover from the impact of last week’s quake when Sunday’s even more powerful tremor struck.
