Delhi High Court on arguments over Agnipath scheme: “We’re not experts”

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday said it was not an “expert” on the Agnipath scheme and asked the petitioner to approach the authorities concerned.

A division bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar was hearing a plea challenging the scheme, under which the Delhi government provides financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to families of those killed in road accidents.

The petitioner, who has himself been a victim of a road accident, contended that the scheme was “discriminatory” as it did not provide any assistance to those who were grievously injured in accidents.

He also claimed that the scheme was “unconstitutional” as it violated the right to equality.

The bench, however, said it could not go into the merits of the scheme and asked the petitioner to approach the Delhi government or the Delhi Traffic Police with his grievances.
