The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls are set to be held on April 23 and the early trends show that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are neck and neck. This is cause for concern for both parties as there is no anti-defection law in MCD polls. This means that the councillors can switch sides after the elections without any repercussions.

The BJP is currently in power in all three municipal corporations in Delhi. However, the AAP made a strong showing in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, winning 67 out of 70 seats. The BJP won just three seats.

The MCD polls are being seen as a test of popularity for the AAP government in Delhi. The party has been campaigning hard and has been highlighting its work in the last two years. However, the BJP is also campaigning aggressively and is hoping to make inroads into the AAP’s support base.

The early trends show that the AAP is leading in 45 wards and the BJP is ahead in 40 wards. There are a total of 272 wards in the three municipal corporations. The trends also show that the Congress is struggling to make an impact in the polls.
