Experts report discovering a new songbird in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.

The new songbird, which has been provisionally named Arunachal macaw, is a member of the parrot family and is the first new species of bird to be discovered in India in over 50 years. The bird was discovered by a team of experts from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) during a survey of the avifauna of the Arunachal Pradesh Himalaya.

The new bird is a striking blue and green, with a yellow breast and face. It is found in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh at an altitude of 2,000-3,000 metres.

The discovery of the new species is a significant event, not just for India but for the world of ornithology. The Arunachal macaw is the first new species of bird to be discovered in India in over 50 years, and only the second new species of bird to be discovered in Asia in the 21st century.
