Children’s Day is observed in India on the anniversary of the birth of Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation’s first prime minister. As “World Children’s Day” approaches on Sunday, this celebration is expected to get bigger in the coming days. What takes place in the days that follow, you ask? The good news is that UNICEF’s office in India has some good news to share. This week, you have the chance to see a number of structures throughout the nation, including some of the most recognisable monuments, turn “blue.” Since 1989, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has recognised November 20 as a worldwide holiday. This week, the buildings are painted blue to symbolise the continued support for improving the safety and wellbeing of children.

“Do you know why buildings in India are turning blue? For _, that is! Watch out for suspicious activity in your city and support kids! #GoBlue for #WorldChildrensDay, the UNICEF tweeted on Monday. “Today is an action day for children, led by kids! Happy #ChildrensDay, the UN organisation tweeted in a separate tweet. The week of November 14–20 is also recognised as “Child Rights Week.” Activities are planned to motivate kids to learn about their rights and how to access them.

According to UNICEF, last year, about 230 buildings nationwide showed their support for “World Children’s Day.” Several famous buildings, including Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister’s office, the Parliament building, Qutub Minar, Kolkata’s Howrah Bridge, and Hyderabad’s Charminar, were illuminated in blue to show support for children’s rights.
