Google is reportedly developing new technology to provide earlier warnings of severe flooding in climate-vulnerable regions, enhancing its ability to provide reliable and valuable information during crises.

Google’s AI has accurately predicted riverine floods up to seven days in advance, providing reliable predictions to 80 countries, highlighting the potential of machine learning in managing one of the world’s most common natural disasters.

Floods are the most common natural disaster, exposing nearly 19% of the world’s population to significant hazards, according to a Google blog post.

Google’s AI-powered flood forecasting method has significantly improved accuracy, reducing the average prediction time from zero to five days. The method uses historical events, river level readings, height, topography data, and localized maps to train machine learning models, enabling reliable flood predictions even in areas with insufficient data.

Google’s AI has significantly impacted flood forecasting in underrepresented countries like Africa and Asia, overcoming historical challenges due to lack of streamflow gauges in rivers by utilizing available data and applying machine learning models.

Google has made flood projections accessible to 460 million people across 80 countries through various channels, including Google Search, Maps, Android alerts, and its Flood Hub web app in 2022.

Google plans to enhance flood forecasting models using machine learning, collaborating with academic researchers to create a global, end-to-end platform.
