Gen. Bipin Rawat, India’s first CDS, is remembered
India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, is being remembered as a “soldier’s soldier” following his death on Tuesday.
Rawat, who was 66, died after a long battle with cancer. He had served as the chief of India’s army from 2016 to 2019, and was appointed as the country’s first CDS in 2020.
Rawat was known for his no-nonsense approach to military matters, and was respected by both his subordinates and his peers. He was also known for his frankness, and was not afraid to speak his mind on controversial topics.
Following his death, tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that Rawat was a “true patriot” who served the nation with distinction.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Rawat was an “outstanding officer” who made a “lasting contribution” to the Indian army.
President Ram Nath Kovind said that Rawat was a “great son of India” who served the country with “distinction and dedication”.
It is clear that Rawat will be remembered as a man who was passionate about.
