While monsoon has arrived in some regions of the nation, a brutal heatwave still affects many others. It makes sense that the use of air conditioners has increased dramatically when temperatures reach 40–45 degrees. The majority of people rely on air conditioners to help them cope with the extreme heat that prevails during most of the day. On the other hand, excessive air conditioning use can be having unanticipated negative effects on your health. The air conditioner can help with sweating and provide respite from the hot weather by reducing the amount of heat and humidity in the surrounding air.

Excessive usage of air conditioning can cause dehydration of the skin, hair, nose, and throat. It has the potential to essentially dry down mucous membranes, which makes them less effective in shielding you from dangerous bacteria and viruses. Spending a lot of time in air conditioning may be the cause of your current cold, cough, and low immunity.

Additionally, spending too much time in an air-conditioned area can dehydrate you or make you drowsy. Use your air conditioner sparingly and take occasional breaks to keep the air from becoming overly dry in order to avoid these problems.

In an interview, Dr. Radhika Raheja, a dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon at the Radical Skin and Hair clinic in Sector 17, Faridabad, describes the negative effects of using air conditioning excessively. “Dry eyes, lethargy, dehydration, dry or itchy skin, headaches, respiratory issues, allergies and asthma, noise pollution, infectious diseases, and indoor pollutants are among the common health concerns associated with prolonged exposure to air conditioning,” according to her.

adverse consequences of excessive air conditioning
1. Dry skin: Excessive exposure to air conditioning systems can lower air moisture levels, which can cause dry skin. You have flaky, itchy skin.

2. Dry eyes: If you already suffer from dry eyes, prolonged exposure to air conditioning can exacerbate the condition, causing itching and discomfort in the eyes.

3. Decreased oil production: Sweating can cause the skin to produce less oil, which can leave the skin dry and lifeless.

4. Skin disorders: Extended exposure to dry air can make pre-existing skin diseases like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema worse.

5. Early aging of the skin: When moisture is lost, your skin starts to shrivel. As a result, its elasticity diminishes, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear earlier.

6. Damage to hair: AC can remove the natural oils that shield hair. Hair may become dry, brittle, and more likely to break as a result of this.

7. Allergies and infectious diseases: Dust, pollen, and mold are among the allergens that can thrive in air conditioning systems. These airborne allergens have the potential to cause urticaria, skin allergies, rash, and other related conditions.

Furthermore, it’s important to stay hydrated when using air conditioning because dehydration rates are higher in rooms with air conditioning. To keep your skin and eyes healthy, never forget to take breaks from the air conditioning and to stay properly hydrated.
