In a 36-year-old case involving a forged guns license, Varanasi’s special MP/MLA court on Wednesday convicted gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to life in jail. The court found Mukhtar Ansari guilty on Tuesday and set March 13 as the date to determine the case’s sentence amount.

Following a hearing, Singh said that Mukhtar was found guilty in the case under sections 30 of the Arms Act, 120B (criminal conspiracy), 428 (mischief), 467 (forgery of valuable security), and 468 (forgery with the intent to deceive) of the Indian Penal Code.

What is the situation?

Mukhtar Ansari had sought for a double-barrel gun license with the district magistrate in Ghazipur on June 10, 1987. Afterwards, the district magistrate and the superintendent of police’s fictitious signatures were used to secure the weapons license.

When this scam was discovered on December 4, 1990, the CB-CID filed a police report. Based on the complaint, a case was filed at the Mohadabad police station in Ghazipur under several IPC sections against five people, including Mukhtar Ansari.
