Apple occasionally acquires smaller technology companies, but does not disclose its plans.

Apple has acquired Canadian AI startup DarwinAI, according to Bloomberg, a move that was announced earlier this year by Tim Cook.

A report indicates that several DarwinAI employees have joined Apple’s AI division, who have not been identified due to the unofficial announcement of the deal.

DarwinAI, a Canadian startup, specializes in developing AI systems for faster and smaller component inspections in various industries.

Alexander Wong, a former AI researcher from the University of Waterloo, has been appointed as a director in Apple’s AI division.

Apple disclosed occasional purchases of smaller tech companies, but did not disclose plans. Shares briefly surged to $173.37, but later fell 10% to $172.92.

DarwinAI, a Canadian company, raised over $15 million in 2022, with investments from Honeywell Ventures and Inovia Capital, and has collaborated with Lockheed Martin and Intel.

Apple is acquiring generative AI technology for its iOS 18 software, marking a significant AI push this year. Tim Cook has promised to “break new ground” in AI, with an announcement expected at the company’s developers conference in June.

Apple, despite acquiring numerous AI companies, has fallen behind in the generative AI market due to the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, while rivals Google and Microsoft have gained prominence.
