Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her comments on the Union government’s handling of the economy, saying the state’s economy was in shambles.

“I would like to ask Mamata Banerjee what she has done for the economy of West Bengal. The state’s economy is in shambles. The state is in a debt trap. The industrialisation in the state has come to a standstill,” Sitharaman said during a press conference in Kolkata.

The finance minister’s comments come days after Banerjee hit out at the Centre over the state of the economy, saying the country was going through an “economic emergency”.

“The entire country is facing an economic emergency. The government is only concerned about its political emergency,” Banerjee had said.

Sitharaman said Banerjee was “worried” about the BJP’s rise in the state and was therefore making such comments.

“Mamata Banerjee is worried about the BJP’s rise in West Bengal. She is trying to communalise the situation. But the people of the state are wise.
