Congressman Rahul Gandhi was granted bail by a Bengaluru court on Friday in connection with a defamation lawsuit brought by the Karnataka chapter of the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi’s complaint centers on advertisements that were released prior to the assembly elections of the previous year, alleging rampant corruption by the Karnataka government of the Bharatiya Janata Party during its 2019–2023 term.

The BJP lodged a complaint in June 2023, claiming that these advertisements, which appeared in prominent Karnataka newspapers on May 5, 2023, contained reckless and false statements. The advertisements, dubbed “Corruption rate card,” decried the Basavaraj Bommai government of the BJP as a “40 per cent Commission Sarkara (government).”

According to the lawsuit, the advertisements were released by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, which was headed by its president, Shivakumar, and the then-leader of the opposition, Siddaramaiah. Rahul Gandhi shared the “defamatory advertisement” on his social media account on X, it was also mentioned.

On June 1, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar appeared in court about the case, and the court granted them bail. Judge K. N. Shivakumar scheduled Rahul Gandhi’s in-person appearance for June 7. Gandhi’s attorney asked for an exemption from appearance during the hearing, but the complainant’s side objected, claiming that exemptions should not be granted repeatedly.

In a different instance, Rahul Gandhi’s 2018 defamation lawsuit against Union Home Minister Amit Shah was postponed by an MP-MLA court in Prayagraj on Friday. The reason for the postponement was the Gandhis’ remarks. Owing to the passing of an attorney, the hearing was moved to June 18.

BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed the lawsuit, which is related to remarks Gandhi made in May 2018 during a news conference in Bengaluru, when he claimed the BJP president was connected to a murder case.

Shah was cleared in 2014 from a 2005 fake encounter case by a special CBI court.
