The head of UGC discusses translating books for Indian language courses

The head of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Prof. D.P. Singh, has said that translating books into Indian languages is the need of the hour to ensure that students from all linguistic backgrounds can access quality education.

He was speaking at a conference on ‘Indian Language Education in the 21st Century’, organised by the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) in Mysuru.

Prof. Singh said that while the UGC has been encouraging the use of Indian languages in higher education, there is a need to do more to ensure that students from all regions can access quality education in their mother tongue.

He pointed out that many Indian language books are not available in translation, and this is a major barrier to education for students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The UGC head said that his commission is working on a proposal to provide financial assistance to universities and colleges for translating books into Indian languages.

He also called for more research on Indian languages, and said that the CIIL should take the lead in this regard.
