Russian invasion of Ukraine: why? Kremlin clarifies once more
The Kremlin has issued a statement clarifying its position on the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the invasion was justified because Ukraine had been preparing to attack Russia.
“The Ukrainian side was preparing to launch a large-scale military operation against our country,” Peskov said. “In order to protect the lives of Russian citizens, we had to take measures to ensure the safety of our borders.”
Peskov also said that the Kremlin does not consider Ukraine to be a sovereign state and that Russia does not recognize the current Ukrainian government.
“Ukraine is not a sovereign state, it is a territory occupied by hostile forces,” Peskov said. “The current Ukrainian government is not legitimate.”
The Kremlin’s statement comes as a surprise to many, as Russia has previously said that it does not consider Ukraine to be a part of its territory. This latest statement seems to be a direct response to the growing international condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
