After a US-backed vote, Iran is poised to leave the UN’s women’s body: What this implies

US-backed vote

The United States has long been a champion of women’s rights, both at home and abroad. So it came as a surprise when it was revealed that the US had voted against Iran’s bid to join the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women.

The Commission on the Status of Women is a UN body that “promotes gender equality and the empowerment of women.” It seems odd, then, that the US would vote against Iran’s membership given its stated commitment to gender equality.

There are a few possible explanations for the US vote. One is that the US is trying to send a message to Iran that its human rights record is not up to par. By voting against Iran’s membership in the Commission on the Status of Women, the US is essentially saying that Iran is not doing enough to promote gender equality.

Another explanation is that the US is using the Commission on the Status of Women as a way to apply pressure on Iran. The US may be hoping that by keeping Iran out of the Commission, it will be less likely to pass resolutions that are critical of the US.

Whatever the reason for the US vote, it is clear that the Trump administration is not as committed to gender equality as it claims to be.
