Karnataka issues a warning following the first Zika incidence.

The Indian state of Karnataka has issued a health warning following the confirmation of the first case of Zika virus in the country. The patient, a 35-year-old man from the city of Bengaluru, had recently returned from a trip to Singapore, where he is believed to have contracted the virus.

Symptoms of Zika include mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache. The virus is primarily spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, and can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy. There is no specific treatment for Zika, and no vaccine is currently available.

The Karnataka government has advised people to take precautions against mosquito bites, and has asked pregnant women to postpone non-essential travel to Zika-affected areas. With the outbreak of Zika in Latin America and the Caribbean, there is a risk that the virus could spread to other parts of India.
