Leo Varadkar, who is gay and mixed-race, will serve as Ireland’s prime minister once more.
Leo Varadkar, who made history in 2015 as Ireland’s first openly gay prime minister, will serve in the role once more.
Varadkar, who is of mixed-race heritage, came out as gay in a radio interview in 2015, just before he was elected prime minister. He is the son of an Indian immigrant father and an Irish mother.
“It’s not something that defines me,” Varadkar said of his sexuality in the 2015 interview. “I’m not a half-Indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician for that matter. It’s just part of who I am, it doesn’t define me, it is part of my character I suppose.”
As prime minister, Varadkar has been a champion of LGBTQ rights, helping to lead the charge for marriage equality in Ireland. He has also been an outspoken critic of racism, and has said that he wants to make Ireland a more welcoming place for immigrants.
“We’re all human beings first and foremost,” Varadkar said in a 2019 interview with The Irish Times. “It doesn’t matter what our background is or where we’re from. We all want the same things in life.”
