The injured men were identified as Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, and Vladimir Antyufeev, the republic’s “deputy prime minister”.

Both men were taken to a hospital in Donetsk for treatment. There was no immediate word on their condition.

The Donetsk People’s Republic is a breakaway state in eastern Ukraine that is supported by Russia. The Ukrainian government has been fighting against the republic’s forces since 2014.

The fighting in Donetsk has intensified in recent days, with both sides exchanging heavy artillery fire. The Ukrainian military has accused the pro-Russian forces of using civilians as human shields.

The pro-Russian forces have accused the Ukrainian military of indiscriminately shelling residential areas.
