Joshimath locals said they are looking into an uncertain future.

The future is uncertain for the locals of Joshimath. They are looking into what lies ahead with trepidation. The town has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown has taken a toll on businesses and livelihoods. With the tourism industry at a standstill, the locals are struggling to make ends meet. Many have been forced to take up odd jobs just to survive. The situation is particularly dire for the daily wage workers and the small businesses who are the backbone of the town. The future looks bleak for Joshimath but the locals are hopeful that things will eventually get better.

Usha, 60, a local of Joshimath’s Manohar Bagh neighbourhood, observed eloquently, “We are on the verge of losing our identity,” as she pointed to the fractures that have appeared on a temple inside the Jyotirmath grounds.

Usha claimed that since cracks began appearing in her home over a week ago, she has been spending most of the days outside, similar to many of her neighbours. “The fissures have begun enlarging. We have been forced to leave the home that we worked so hard to build over the years,” she added.

We are facing an uncertain future, according to Rajni, a Joshimath resident and teacher hired by a private school. The school where I work might also disappear.
