The Indian government has announced its plans to launch its first human spacecraft by the end of 2024. This spacecraft, which will be called the Gaganyaan, will be India’s first manned mission to space. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2018.

The Gaganyaan will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, and will carry three astronauts on a seven-day mission to space. The astronauts will conduct scientific experiments during their time in space, and will also test the spacecraft’s re-entry and landing systems.

The Indian government has allocated Rs 10,000 crore (US$1.4 billion) for the Gaganyaan project, and has said that it is committed to making India a leading space-faring nation.
