Since 1944, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has celebrated International Civil Aviation Day on December 7. The day commemorates the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention.

The Convention established the principles that govern civil aviation today, including the sovereignty of nations over their airspace, the international regulation of air traffic, and the promotion of safety in civil aviation.

Each year, ICAO member states celebrate International Civil Aviation Day with events and activities that highlight the importance of civil aviation to the global community.

This year, ICAO is focusing on the role of aviation in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of 17 goals that member states of the UN have committed to achieving by 2030.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals include goals like gender equality, no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, and clean water and sanitation. Aviation can help achieve these goals by increasing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

For example, aviation helps connect remote communities to the rest of the world, which is essential for ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against poverty.
