Istanbul bombing: One suspect is in custody, 21 are being sought after, and the interior minister accuses Kurdish militants.
The bombing at Istiklal Avenue, the city’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, was the subject of 46 arrests, according to Istanbul Police on Monday, according to news agency Reuters. This includes Ahlam Albashir, a Syrian woman suspected of detonating the bomb.
The woman admitted during her initial interrogation that she had received training from Kurdish militants in Syria and had travelled through the Afrin region of northwest Syria to enter Turkey.
The explosion killed six Turkish citizens at around 4:13 PM (1313 GMT). While ambulances and police vans were being dispatched, other people who had been on the busy street before the attack fled the scene.
Suleyman Soylu, the interior minister, had attributed the attack on Istanbul to Kurdish militants from Kobani. We have determined that Kobani provided the attack’s instructions, the man said. Turkish forces have been conducting operations against YPG militants in Kobani, a city in northern Syria, for the past few years.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the PKK, a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, has been designated a terrorist organisation on a global scale by the US and other EU members. A branch of the PKK is the YPG.
According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, two people died in the hospital and four people died at the scene of the bomb explosion on Sunday. Before leaving for the G-20 summit in Bali, Erdogan said the explosion “smells like terrorism” and promised that those responsible would face consequences.
The attack left around 81 people injured. 50 patients have been released from the hospital, raising fears that Istanbul will experience a spate of deadly bombings similar to those carried out by outlawed Kurdish groups between 2015 and 2017.
