Jairam Ramesh and Kiren Rijiju debate Nehru and Kashmir on Children’s Day.
On the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, a full-fledged history war over Kashmir has broken out between Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and Union law minister Kiren Rijiju. In a piece he wrote for the news outlet CNN News 18, Rijiju outlined the “Five Nehruvian Blunders of Kashmir.” Congressmen like Jairam Ramesh, who referred to him as a “Distorian,” harshly criticised his article.
Karan Singh, the son of the Maharaja, was among the Congress leaders who responded angrily to the article. The Congress leader explained his father’s role in the developments that led to J&K’s accession to India in an opinion piece published on Hindustan Times.
Rijiju responded to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s characterization of him as a “Distorian” with new arguments in another article posted on the same website, charging the grand old party with prioritising Nehru over India.
Jairam Ramesh forwarded a Kashmir Life article that supported Nehru over J&K. According to the article, Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi were crystal clear about their desire for Jammu and Kashmir to become part of India. In order to secure J&K’s accession to India, it was claimed that Nehru’s Kashmiri heritage and friendship with Sheikh Abdullah marked a “important milestone.”
