The southern state of Kerala is all set to ask the Supreme Court to execute a businessman who has been convicted of raping and murdering a young woman. The move comes after the Kerala High Court recently confirmed the death sentence of the convict, Ameerul Islam.

The case dates back to April 2016, when Islam, a native of Assam, had lured the 23-year-old victim, a student of a local college, to his room on the pretext of giving her a job. He then raped and murdered her. The body of the victim was found in a wooded area near the college a few days later.

Islam was arrested and charged with rape and murder. He was convicted by a trial court in 2017 and was awarded the death sentence. The Kerala High Court confirmed the sentence last week.

Now, the state government has decided to file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the execution of the death sentence. The move comes amid mounting public pressure for the convicted rapist-murderer to be hanged.

The victim’s family has welcomed the state government’s decision to seek the execution of the death sentence. They have said that they hope that the Supreme Court will swiftly dispose of the petition and that Islam will be hanged.
