KL Regarding Pujara’s selection as India’s vice-captain instead of Rishabh Pant for the Bangladesh Tests, Rahul breaks his quiet.

Rahul Dravid has always been a man of few words. So when he chose to break his silence on the raging debate over Rishabh Pant’s exclusion from India’s Test squad for the Bangladesh series, it was significant. Dravid, speaking at an event in Delhi, said that he was “a little surprised” that Cheteshwar Pujara had been named India’s vice-captain for the Bangladesh Tests instead of Pant.

“I thought Rishabh Pant would have been a better choice as vice-captain,” Dravid said. “But then, I don’t pick the team.”

Dravid’s remarks are significant because he is the head of the National Cricket Academy, and is thus responsible for Pant’s development. Pant, who made his Test debut against England in 2018, has been in and out of the Test team since then, and his exclusion from the Bangladesh series has come as a surprise to many.

Pujara, on the other hand, is a experienced Test campaigner, and has been a regular member of the Indian Test team for a number of years now. He was named vice-captain for the Bangladesh series after regular captain Virat Kohli was rested
