NEW DELHI: On Thursday, the 91-year-old former prime minister Manmohan Singh censured the 73-year-old Prime Minister Narendra Modi severely for his election campaign address. Singh called Modi the first prime minister to degrade public discourse and accused him of engaging in the “most vicious form of hate speeches.”

Singh added that there was just one more opportunity to make sure that “democracy and Constitution are protected from the repeated assaults of a despotic regime trying to unleash dictatorship in India” in his plea to Punjabis who are scheduled to cast their ballots on June 1.

“No prime minister in history has spoken in such derogatory, unparliamentary, and crude words intended to disparage the opposition or a particular segment of the public. Additionally, he has accused me of making several untrue claims. Never in my life have I chosen one community above another. In a three-page open letter, Singh, who left the Rajya Sabha in March, stated that “that is the sole copyright of the BJP.”

Singh, who served as prime minister of a coalition led by the Congress for ten years until 2014, claimed that only the Congress could guarantee a progressive future focused on growth while preserving democracy and the Constitution.

Despite PM Modi’s pledge to double farmer income by 2022, he claimed that his government’s initiatives in the farmers’ incomes over the past ten years have decreased.

Farmers in the country earn an average of just Rs. 27 per day on a monthly basis, while they owe an average of Rs. 27,000 in debt (NSSO). The high cost of inputs, such as fuel and fertilisers, along with the GST on at least 35 pieces of farm equipment and arbitrary decisions about farm export and import have wiped out our farm households’ savings and pushed them to the outside of society, the speaker claimed.

The top Congressman also criticised the BJP administration for forcing the military services to participate in the “ill-conceived” Agniveer programme. The BJP believes that bravery, patriotism, and service are only worth four years. This demonstrates their counterfeit nationalism,” he wrote in a letter to Punjabi people.
